Guided tours "Architecture at the service of memory"

How does one preserve a masterpiece of modernist architecture, thought for eternity but confronted with the test of time and the fragility of its own materials?
On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, under the theme "Heritage in danger", (re)discover the memorial of the martyrs of the Deportation through the eyes of its architect, Georges-Henri Pingusson (1894-1978). Inaugurated by General de Gaulle in April 1962 on the tip of Île de la Cité, this monument, classified as a historical monument in 2007, is one of the major achievements of this figure of the French modernist movement, which marked its century with a demanding and sensitive approach to space. But this strong architectural gesture, carved from raw concrete on the banks of the Seine, today poses the challenges specific to the conservation of 20th-century heritage: the wear and tear of its materials, the misuse linked to tourist visits, and the vagaries of its urban environment, notably the redevelopment work around Notre-Dame. Both a lesson in architecture and a place of remembrance, the memorial to the martyrs of the Deportation bears witness to the culture and sensitivity of its designer.

The memorial of the martyrs of the deportation, wanted by the Association le Réseau du Souvenir, was inaugurated on April 12, 1962 to tell about the deportations from France during the Second World War. It is also the work of the architect Georges-Henri Pingusson, in which a journey of meditation with the tomb of the unknown deportee is proposed, but also educational by the presence of a permanent exhibition describing life in the camps.
