Die Europäischen Tage des Kulturerbes 2026 sind eine weitere Gelegenheit, sich im Rahmen einer Konferenz zu versammeln.
Ein Bahnhof? Es ist die Höhle mit der verdorbenen Atmosphäre, den verstopften und verschmutzten Kais, den traurigen und schmutzigen Wänden, den verschmierten und beschmutzten Fenstern, den unleserlichen Uhren und den lochen Plakaten." (La Lanterne, 9. September 1924). Als symbolische Infrastruktur der Industrialisierung in der kollektiven Vorstellung kristallisiert der Bahnhof die ambivalente Einstellung der Zeitgenossen zur fossilen Modernität. geschätzt für das, was sie möglich macht, aber kritisiert für die Umweltbelastungen, die sie in der bewohnten Umgebung und den Mobilitätserfahrungen verursacht.
Halb Palais und halb "Transportfabrik", die in der Stadt überflutet, hört die Dualität der Bahnhöfe manchmal auf ihr Andenken, wobei das vorherrschende Narrativ eher dazu neigt, die Frage der sozialen und ökologischen Kosten der Infrastruktur zu verdrängen.
Ausgehend von einer Doktorarbeit über die Geschichte der Luftverschmutzung durch die Eisenbahn bietet der Beitrag eine alternative Erzählung der Geschichte der historischen Bahnhöfe aus dem Blickwinkel des Rauchs, indem er die materiellen Spannungen darlegt. soziale und ökologische Aspekte, die ihre Konzeption, ihre städtische Integration und ihre Nutzung begleitet haben.
Die Konferenz wird durch eine Diskussion darüber verlängert, wie die Geschichte einen erneuerten historischen Blick auf die Bahnhöfe begleiten kann, um eine neue Erzählung neu zu erfinden.

The European Heritage Days 2026 are a new opportunity to meet in the context of a conference.
«A station? It is the lair with a tainted atmosphere, congested and polluted docks, sad and dirty walls, tarnished and soiled windows, illegible clocks, posters in rags." (La Lanterne, 9 September 1924). Emblematic infrastructure of industrialization in the collective imagination, the railway station crystallizes the ambivalence of contemporary feelings towards fossil modernity, appreciated for what it makes possible but criticized for the nuisances it causes in the inhabited environment and mobility experiences.
Half a palace and half a "transport factory" overflowing in the city, the duality of stations sometimes stops at their memory, the dominant narrative tending instead to erase the question of social and environmental costs of infrastructure.
Based on a doctoral thesis on the history of air pollution by the railway, the intervention offers an alternative narrative of the history of heritage stations through the lens of fumes by exposing material tensions, social and environmental aspects having accompanied their design, urban integration and operation.
The conference will be followed by a discussion on how history can accompany a renewal of the patrimonial look at stations to reimagine a new narrative.

Le Giornate europee del patrimonio 2026 sono un'altra occasione per riunirsi in una conferenza.
Una stazione? È la tana dall'atmosfera viziata, dai marciapiedi affollati e inquinati, dalle pareti tristi e sporche, dai vetri opachi e contaminati, dagli orologi illeggibili, dai manifesti a loschi." (La Lanterne, 9 settembre 1924). Infrastruttura emblematica dell'industrializzazione nell'immaginario collettivo, la stazione ferroviaria cristallizza l'ambivalenza del sentimento dei contemporanei nei confronti della modernità fossile, apprezzata per ciò che rende possibile, ma criticata per i danni che provoca nell'ambiente abitato e nelle esperienze di mobilità.
A metà palazzo e a metà "fabbrica di trasporto" che trabocca nella città, la dualità delle stazioni si ferma talvolta alla loro memoria, il racconto dominante tende piuttosto a cancellare la questione dei costi sociali e ambientali dell'infrastruttura.
A partire da una tesi di dottorato sulla storia dell'inquinamento atmosferico causato dalle ferrovie, l'intervento propone un racconto alternativo della storia delle stazioni storiche attraverso il prisma dei fumi, esponendo le tensioni materiali, sociali e ambientali che hanno accompagnato la loro progettazione, il loro inserimento urbano e il loro sfruttamento.
La conferenza sarà prolungata da una discussione su come la storia può accompagnare un rinnovamento dello sguardo patrimoniale rivolto alle stazioni per reimmaginare un nuovo racconto.

Infrastructure emblématique de l’industrialisation dans l’imaginaire collectif, la gare de chemin de fer cristallise l’ambivalence de sentiment des contemporains à l’égard de la modernité fossile, appréciée pour ce qu’elle rend possible mais critiquée pour les nuisances qu’elle occasionne dans l’environnement habité et les expériences de mobilité.
A moitié palais et à moitié “usine de transport” débordant dans la ville, la dualité des gares s’arrête parfois à leur mémoire, le récit dominant tendant plutôt à effacer la question des coûts sociaux et environnementaux de l’infrastructure.
A partir d’une thèse de doctorat portant sur l’histoire de la pollution de l’air par le chemin de fer, l’intervention propose un récit alternatif de l’histoire des gares patrimoniales au prisme des fumées en exposant les tensions matérielles, sociales et environnementales ayant accompagné leur conception, leur insertion urbaine et leur exploitation.
La conférence sera prolongée d'une discussion sur la manière dont l'histoire peut accompagner un renouvellement du regard patrimonial porté sur les gares pour réimaginer un nouveau récit.

Infraestructura emblemática de la industrialización en el imaginario colectivo, la estación de ferrocarril cristaliza la ambivalencia del sentimiento de los contemporáneos frente a la modernidad fósil, apreciada por lo que hace posible, pero criticada por los perjuicios que causa en el entorno habitado y las experiencias de movilidad.
Mitad palacio y mitad "fábrica de transporte" desbordando en la ciudad, la dualidad de las estaciones se detiene a veces a su memoria, el relato dominante tiende más bien a borrar la cuestión de los costos sociales y ambientales de la infraestructura.
A partir de una tesis doctoral sobre la historia de la contaminación del aire por el ferrocarril, la intervención propone un relato alternativo de la historia de las estaciones patrimoniales al prisma de los humos exponiendo las tensiones materiales, sociales y medioambientales que han acompañado su concepción, su integración urbana y su explotación.
La conferencia se prolongará con una discusión sobre cómo la historia puede acompañar una renovación de la mirada patrimonial puesta en las estaciones para reimaginar un nuevo relato.
