An artist-researcher based between Paris and Brussels, Laure Winants explores the interaction of ecosystems through the dialogue between matter and light. Her works, sensitive to their environments, respond to light, time, temperature, and humidity.
The collections of the Musée de Minéralogie each bear witness, in their own way, to a relationship with time: fossils, for instance, evoke the remnants of a past era that endures, while quartz, used in horology, allows us to measure the passing of time.
Drawing on the abundant richness of the Museum's pieces, the artist holds three temporal scales in tension: the geological time of minerals and crystallization, the biological time of marine organisms, and the contemporary time of transformations currently underway.
It is by highlighting the interdependence of these three temporalities that Laure Winants builds her reflection, structured around a thread running through her entire body of work: time makes light.
Developing experimental sculptural forms made from calcareous materials and biological fragments, Winants brings the collection's marine fossils (limestones, shells, petrified organisms) into resonance with her own contemporary fossils. Her pieces, at times speculative, propose a vision of fossilization not as a closed phenomenon, but as a process that remains definitively active.
This exhibition is part of the PhotoSaintGermain festival. Held in the heart of Paris, in the iconic Saint-Germain-des-Prés district, PhotoSaintGermain is an annual festival dedicated to promoting photographic creation.
PhotoSaintGermain offers a free, open-access trail of exhibitions across a selection of museums, cultural centers, galleries, and bookshops on the Left Bank. This trail showcases a sharp and eclectic program curated by the partner galleries, alongside several original exhibitions and unpublished projects designed and produced by the festival.
