Material Histories
In partnership with PhotoSaintGermain, the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris and the École nationale supérieure de la Photographie d'Arles continue their collaboration, joining forces once again to organize an exhibition entitled Material Histories. Photography is intimately linked to a material history, dependent on the extraction of minerals (from the silver of the medium's beginnings to the rare earths of Inner Mongolia today). Building on the question of extractivist legacies that runs through research at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, this exhibition takes the materiality of the image as its starting point, seeking out, beneath the surface, the underground histories bound up with it. In doing so, it touches on the modes of production of a work, on an archaeological approach to media as much as an ecological and postcolonial one. It opens itself to both experimental and documentary forms. Working the material, extracting resources or data, unearthing histories, and bringing hidden areas to light are all avenues to explore.
