Entre Vues – The Photography of Frank Horvat
The retrospective exhibition Entre Vues – The Photography of Frank Horvat, presented by the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center, showcases both iconic and lesser-known photographs from Horvat’s career, highlighting his continuous experimentation with artistic styles, cultural registers, and photographic techniques. Although Horvat spent most of his life in France, he was connected to several cultures and also had Hungarian roots.
One of the central elements of the exhibition is the interview book Entre Vues, in which Frank Horvat engages in conversations with fellow photographers about the nature of photography, the creative process, technique, intuition, the “decisive moment,” and what photography means to them as both an art form and a way of life.
In line with the Capa Center’s focus on the relationship between photography and the printed press, a dedicated section of the exhibition explores Horvat’s work for major international magazines, highlighting his collaborations with publications such as Vogue, Elle, Stern, and Paris Match. It demonstrates how Horvat navigated the creative expectations of fashion, portrait, and documentary photography within the context of mass media, and how he combined artistic vision with the narrative language of the press.
The exhibition also focuses on a lesser-known aspect of Horvat’s oeuvre: his early interest in digital techniques, including his experiments with Photoshop from the very first years following the program’s release. These works, together with the publications in which they appeared, emphasize Horvat’s openness to innovation and his sensitivity to new technological and artistic developments, proving that even in the later stages of his career he remained receptive to changing times and evolving visual languages.
