The abbey of Saint-Savin was founded at the beginning of the 9th century on the site of the discovery of the tombs of two Christian martyred saints, Savin and Cyprien, who died in the 5th century. The construction of the current abbey church dates from the second half of the 11th century (1040-1090). In the 16th century, the abbey narrowly escaped destruction. The installation of the congregation of Saint-Maur in 1640 allowed it to experience a renewal: reconstruction from 1682 of the abbey buildings and the cloister.
