Florian Luthi. Meteor Ghosts
The project Meteor Ghosts, by Geneva-based artist and photographer Florian Luthi, explores the shifting boundary between reality, memory and myth.

The project draws inspiration from the wave of UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) sightings that swept across France in 1954, particularly along the French-Swiss border. At the time, the press reported strange lights, apparitions and mysterious encounters, often dismissed as mere fear and speculation. One of these memorable stories comes from Prémanon (a French commune in the Jura department), where four children, including Raymond Romand, claimed to have seen a luminous object, described as a large sugar cube resting on three legs. Although subsequently denied, the story had already taken root in local folklore.
By revisiting the landscapes of his childhood – mist-shrouded forests, deserted villages and the silent Jura mountains – Florian Luthi creates a photographic narrative in which truth wavers and legends endure. Through archive material and documentary images, the artist blurs the boundaries between this news item and the fiction it spawned, transforming the region into a visual investigation where memory, myth and reality converge.

Le projet Fantômes Météores, de l’artiste et photographe genevois Florian Luthi, explore la frontière mouvante entre réalité, mémoire et mythe.

Le projet s’inspire de la vague d’observations d’OVNIs (Objets Volants Non Identifiés) qui traversa la France en 1954, notamment le long de la frontière franco-suisse. La presse rapportait alors d’étranges lumières, des apparitions et de mystérieuses rencontres, souvent réduites à la peur et à la spéculation. L’une de ces histoires marquantes provient de Prémanon (commune française située dans le département du Jura), où quatre enfants, dont Raymond Romand, affirmèrent avoir vu un objet lumineux, décrit comme un gros sucre posé sur trois pieds. Bien que démentie par la suite, l’histoire s’était déjà enracinée dans le folklore local.
En revisitant les paysages de son enfance — forêts embrumées, villages déserts et Jura silencieux — Florian Luthi compose un récit photographique où la vérité vacille et les légendes persistent. À travers archives et images documentaires, l’artiste brouille les limites entre ce fait divers et la fiction qu’il a engendrée, transformant la région en une enquête visuelle où mémoire, mythe et réalité se rencontrent.
