A raw and visceral film, The Chronology of Water chronicles the life of Lidia, born in the Pacific Northwest into an environment ravaged by violence and alcohol. A promising swimmer, the young woman manages to escape her family by enrolling in college, where she participates in a writing project. However, illicit substances continue to flow freely, while the young woman discovers she is bisexual and experiments with sadomasochism.
In adapting Lidia Yuknavitch’s cult-classic memoir, Kristen Stewart delivers a formally free and powerful directorial debut, steeped in the subconscious of a young woman haunted by traumatic memories. An ode to writing and creativity, “an invitation to face ugliness head-on, to accept shame, and to emerge from it all knowing that your body and your story belong to you” (KS).

Film brut et viscéral, The Chronology of Water retrace la vie de Lidia, née dans le Nord-Ouest Pacifique au sein d’un environnement ravagé par la violence et l’alcool. Nageuse prometteuse, la jeune femme parvient à fuir sa famille en entrant à l’université, où elle participe à un projet d’écriture. Cependant, les substances illicites continuent de couler à flots, tandis que la jeune femme se découvre bisexuelle et fait l’expérience du sado-masochisme.
En adaptant les mémoires cultes de Lidia Yuknavitch, Kristen Stewart signe une première réalisation formellement libre et puissante, enveloppée dans l’inconscient d’une jeune femme habitée d’une mémoire traumatique. Une ode à l’écriture et à la création, “ une invitation à regarder en face la laideur, à accepter la honte et à ressortir de tout ça en sachant que votre corps et votre histoire vous appartiennent ” (KS).
