A theatrical and vocal performance exploring death and its rites
During a residency at the Museum of Ethnography Geneva in December 2023, the artistic team behind L’Enveillée immersed themselves in the AIMP (International Archives of Popular Music), listening to songs from around the world devoted to funeral rites. In June 2026, they return to present the performance that emerged, in part, from this research.
Upon a ground of raw sheets, four voices rise — in breath, in nakedness. No recorded music, no artifice: the singing comes from the body, from memory, from presence. L’Enveillée is a performance at the threshold of the sacred, nourished by a profound meditation on death and its rites, and on the function of song and the human voice. Through a vibrant vocal score, it questions our relationship to disappearance: what remains when breath fades? What is transmitted by singing alongside the dead?
Far from pathos, this poetic theatre seeks the essence of ritual: to console, to connect, to transform. A sensory and intimate journey — from cry to appeasement, from mourning to renewal — in which the audience is invited, too, to keep vigil over its own humanity.
The performance (90 min.) will be followed by a conversation with Juliette Kempf, director; Fiorenza Gamba, socio-anthropologist at University of Geneva and member of the Centre International des Études sur la Mort (CIEM); and Victor Randrianary, anthropologist and musicologist specializing in the islands of the Indian Ocean.

Une performance théâtrale et chantée qui interroge la mort et ses rites
Lors d'une résidence au MEG en décembre 2023, l'équipe artistique du projet L'Enveillée s'est immergée dans les AIMP (Archives Internationales de Musique Populaire) à l'écoute de chants du monde entier dédiés aux rites funéraires. En juin 2026, elle revient présenter le spectacle né, entre autres, de ces recherches.
Sur un sol de draps bruts, quatre voix s’élèvent, dans leur souffle, dans leur nudité. Pas de musique enregistrée, pas d’artifice : le chant vient du corps, de la mémoire, de la présence. L’Enveillée est une performance à la lisière du sacré, nourrie d'une méditation profonde sur la mort et ses rites, sur la fonction du chant et de la voix humaine. À travers une partition vibrante, elle interroge notre rapport à la disparition : que reste-t-il quand le souffle s’éteint ? Que transmet-on en chantant aux côtés des morts ? Loin du pathos, ce théâtre-poème cherche l’essence du rite : consoler, relier, transformer. Une traversée sensorielle et intime, du cri à l’apaisement, des pleurs au redressement, où le public est convié à veiller – aussi – sa propre humanité.
La représentation (90 min.) sera suivie d'un échange entre Juliette Kempf, metteuse en scène, Fiorenza Gamba, socio-anthropologue à l'Université de Genève et membre du CIEM (Centre International des Études sur la Mort) et Victor Randrianary, anthropologue et musicologue spécialiste des îles de l'océan Indien.
