Colombian artist Luisa Fernanda Alfonso brings to life the archetypal postures of Mexican character dancers and mariachis in this sequential black-and-white performance. With her Madonna-like face framed by a strict bun, her haughty demeanor, and her back arched proudly as she stands in clicking ankle boots, she blends the feminine and the masculine—flowing ruffles and a form-fitting leotard—giving folklore a twist through her polarizing interpretation. In collaboration with composer Peter Rubel, in a space where the soundscape is a full-fledged partner in the performance, Luisa Fernanda Alfonso seizes upon and then lets go of, builds up and then deconstructs vocal and choreographic traditions.

L’artiste colombienne Luisa Fernanda Alfonso donne corps et voix aux attitudes archétypales des danseurs de caractère et mariachi mexicains dans cette performance séquentielle en noir et blanc. Son visage de Madone dégagé par un chignon strict, l’allure altière et la cambrure fièrement plantée dans des bottines claquantes, elle combine féminin et masculin, volants mouvants et justaucorps moulant, imprimant une torsion au folklore par son interprétation polarisante.
En complicité avec le compositeur Peter Rubel, dans un espace où le matériel sonore est un partenaire de jeu à part entière, Luisa Fernanda Alfonso empoigne puis abandonne, construit puis déconstruit les traditions vocales et chorégraphiques.
