Visiting Bonnefont also means discovering or rediscovering the fabulous history of the Cistercian order and its imprint on local life. Originally, these monks wanted to return to a certain rigor and austerity, to stay out of the world and rehabilitate work, especially manual.
The highly organized order created in 1098 continued to spread. Founded in 1136, Bonnefont was one of the first generations of Cistercian abbeys. Its development will lead locally to the creation of many bastides such as Boussens, Carbonne or Plaisance-du-Touch. Several counts of Comminges were buried in his church.
At its peak, in the 13th century, Bonnefont Abbey had 10,000 hectares of land and nearly 200 monks and convers… against 7 in the Revolution. The reasons for this rise and decline are many and exciting, the guided tour of the remains will allow you to know more!

Alloying the useful with the pleasant, the garden represented to Middle Ages a real haven of peace. It is what suggests you rediscovering the public garden of medieval inspiration of the abbey of Bonnefont on 740 m2\. Place of meditation so was very fond by the cisterciens monks at their time(weather), plants are again learnedly ordered there and associated. With its fountain and its cultures on plessis, this garden presents a sample of the different existent spaces in a monastery to the Middle Ages: the hortus and its edible, the herbularius and its curative, but also the ornamental and utilities (about 120 old(former) plants).
Open from June 2nd till October 29th.
