Usually closed to the public, the François-Mitterrand forest garden can be visited free of charge during the Rendez-vous aux jardins (or during paid guided tours, from April to September). An unprecedented discovery of the BnF, which organizes this same weekend the 7th edition of its Talking Library Festival.
Guided tours of the garden offer visitors the opportunity to discover the history, wildlife and vegetation of this one-hectare space, designed by Dominique Perrault, Gaëlle Lauriot-Prévost and Eric Jacobsen in 1995.
The location of the BnF garden, nestled in the middle of the reading rooms, makes it an unprecedented site for fauna and flora. It is a relay for the ecological functioning of the neighborhood. Different animal and plant species can temporarily use this site to progress in the city or settle there more permanently. This conservation of biodiversity in urban areas, managed ecologically, benefits from the label «Refuge LPO» and is the subject of an agreement with the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle for its study.

The forest garden of the Bibliothèque nationale de France - François Mitterrand , was built in 1995, in a limestone excavation. A hundred large adult Scots pine trees (origin Bord forest, Normandy) constitute the particularity of this garden. Charms, oaks, birches complete and reinforce, with the plantations of undergrowth and spontaneous species, the forest evocation. Environmentally friendly maintenance promotes the development of biodiversity.
