Geometric shapes determined the French gardens of the Baroque. The centrepiece of the Schwetzinger Garten, the circular parterre, follows exactly this strict ideal. From here it goes to a "grande Promenade", an extensive exploration of the garden. Then suddenly nothing is geometrical anymore: Over the course of time, the Schwetzingen garden developed further stylistically, much to the delight of the visitors.
