Since the 10th century, Sainte-Marie de Serrabona, both a parish church and priory of a community of Augustinian Chanoises, has watched over the Boulès valley from the top of the “good mountain”, in Catalan the “serra bona”.
After the Middle Ages, the slow decline of the surrounding villages led to its decline. The church, initially fortified, was finally abandoned and used as a stable. At the beginning of the 20th century, its pink marble grandstand-jubé was cleared. Restored since the 1960s, this Romanesque art hotspot dominates today a vast protected natural area. The priory of Serrabona became in 1968 property of the Department of Pyrénées-Orientales, which leads on all its sites a strong process of valorization. In addition to its conservation and maintenance, he chose to animate it through guided tours, concerts and cultural events in the gardens and in the church.
