It is at the foot of the Cousson mountain in Digne-les-Bains that Alexandra David-Neel designed Samten Dzong, her "residence of reflection", a writer’s house surrounded by a vast garden including a rose garden, a vegetable garden and fruit trees. In 2019, the rose garden and the explorer’s vegetable garden were rehabilitated, and since June 2023, new walking areas are accessible. The garden has regained its rights and the rosebushes embalm the alleys.

Alexandra David-Neel spent 25 years of her life in Asia, and was the first European woman to visit the forbidden city of Lhasa in Tibet. But her travels do not make of her only an explorer: they nourish a literary work of considerable density. Born near Paris, it was in Digne-les-Bains that it died in 1969, at the age of nearly 101, bequeathing to the city all its possessions: property, archives, collections and copyright. The Alexandra David-Neel House allows visitors to visit both its living space – the fully restored writer’s house – and its garden, as well as the museum that retraces its journey, commitments and travels.
