Leaning against the natural slope of the land, the museum is set in a forest with various species (pine, oak, birch, charms, hazel, acacia, etc.) and dotted with sandstone chaos. This picturesque natural site belongs to the forest of Nemours-Poligny which itself is a southern extension of the forest of Fontainebleau. Completed in 1980, the rough concrete and glass building is the work of architect and urban planner Roland Simounet. The museum tour is chronological. The rooms, distributed around patios-gardens presenting the flora of the different periods of Prehistory, are largely open to the outside by large windows.

The Musée départemental de Préhistoire d'Île-de-France, designed by architect Roland Simounet, is located in Nemours, in the heart of a picturesque forest that houses several prehistoric sites. It retraces the major stages of Prehistory and Protohistory of the whole of the Île-de-France, from the first vestiges attesting to the presence of Man (around – 600,000 years old) at the end of the Gaulish period.
