The plateau of Langres is limestone. We are in a land of stones, which is found in the buildings (stone, millstones) and gardens.
«Hortus conclusus» of 300 meters by 100 meters, the garden of Silière is entirely surrounded by dry stone walls, that is to say cut and then laid on each other, without mortar.
At the Jardin de Silière, you will see different types of stones from the plateau of Langres:
- six statues in shell limestone, in addition to a statue of Neptune in marble,
- a decoration of pierced stones forming three-quarters of a circle dominated by the statue of Orpheus,
- a tufer (photo) formed, since the 1840s, by the carbonate contained in the water of the small stream of the romantic promenade.
- At the exit of this promenade, you will find a stone table.
During the visit, we will pay tribute to Pierre Jacquinot who created the romantic promenade in 1846 and to Pierre Massin who rehabilitated the garden from 1990.
