On the impressionist beach, in the eye of Édouard Manet
The collection of the Museum of Amiens, rich in 19th century painting, has no impressionist works. In order to be part of this celebration and to make discover this current of art history to its public, the Musée de Picardie asked for the loan of the painting "Sur la plage" by Edouard Manet, painted in 1873 in Berck-sur-Mer.
It is indeed through the territorial angle that the museum wishes to approach impressionist painting, by showing a beach well known to the Amiens. Impressionism is indeed the witness of the development of seaside tourism. The beach, a natural and modern space, was one of Manet’s favourite motifs to create a new painting.
The presentation of the painting will also be an opportunity to show the public the aspects that characterize Manet’s art: freedom in the imitation of the motif, fluidity of the touch, outdoor execution, abandonment of the rules of perspective, intimacy of the subject. To make the originality of the work more salient, some examples of navies prior to its execution will be presented alongside Manet’s painting.

Although he never exhibited with the so-called Impressionist painters, Édouard Manet (1832-1883) maintained close relations with many of them. In addition to being a reference figure for the «young school», his choice of subjects and his technique are, in the 1870s, very close to those of artists like Monet or Degas.
