As pretty as the idea may seem, it is far from satisfying for the animal world as for the plant world. If the robin still sings, it is good to crush the competition. If earthly ivy has chosen to crawl, it is good to monopolize space and prevent other plants from settling. When the hawk throws itself on a prey, it is not just to «participate». In nature, competition is more than a hobby: it is an art of living that can lead to… death!

Aussi jolie l’idée puisse-t-elle paraître, elle est loin d’être satisfaisante pour le monde animal comme pour le monde végétal.

Aussi jolie l’idée puisse-t-elle paraître, elle est loin d’être satisfaisante pour le monde animal comme pour le monde végétal. Si le rouge-gorge chante encore, c’est bien pour écraser la concurrence. Si le lierre terrestre a choisi de ramper, c’est bien pour monopoliser l’espace et empêcher d’autres plantes de s’installer. Quand l’épervier se lance sur une proie, ce n’est pas juste pour « participer ». Dans la nature, la compétition est plus qu’un simple loisir : c’est un art de vivre qui peut mener jusqu’à… la mort !

Hoe mooi het idee ook mag lijken, het is verre van bevredigend voor de dierenwereld als voor de plantenwereld. Als de rover nog zingt, is het goed om de concurrentie te verpletteren. Als aardse klimop ervoor heeft gekozen om te kruipen, is het goed om de ruimte te monopoliseren en te voorkomen dat andere planten zich vestigen. Wanneer de havik zichzelf op een prooi gooit, is het niet alleen om «deel te nemen». In de natuur is concurrentie meer dan een hobby: Het is een levenskunst die kan leiden tot… dood!
