In its photographic exhibition "Helvécia. A Forgotten Colonial History", the MEG lifts the veil on a little known aspect of Swiss history. Although Switzerland has never had countries under its domination, it has nevertheless collaborated with colonial powers in the appropriation of foreign lands and in the practice of slavery.
The MEG exhibition presents the encounter with the inhabitants of Helvécia in Brazil, at the crossroads of a quest for identity and a research on the past of this former Swiss colony.
The exhibition was created in close collaboration with the photographer Dom Smaz and the journalist Milena Machado Neves, co-authors of a research on the village of Helvécia in Brazil, their country of origin.
The exhibition is free of charge.

Dans son exposition photographique «Helvécia. Une histoire coloniale oubliée», le MEG lève le voile sur un aspect peu connu de l’histoire helvétique. Si la Suisse n’a jamais eu de pays placés sous sa domination, elle a néanmoins collaboré avec des puissances coloniales à l’appropriation de terres étrangères et à la pratique esclavagiste.
L’exposition du MEG présente la rencontre avec les habitant-e-s d’Helvécia au Brésil, au croisement d’une quête identitaire et d’une recherche sur le passé de cette ancienne colonie suisse.
L’exposition s’est faite en étroite collaboration avec le photographe Dom Smaz et la journaliste Milena Machado Neves, coauteurs d’une recherche sur le village d’Helvécia au Brésil, leur pays d’origine.
L'exposition est gratuite.
