Born in Algeria, Djazia Satour draws on the musical roots of her homeland and mixes the chaabi of Algiers of the 50s, the ancestral rhythms of bendirs, the refined melodies of the banjo and mandole with the bass and analog keyboards of a warm and tasty pop.
The sound is raw, almost palpable, while the melodies sung in Arabic with a powerful voice, like hymns, sound like an irresistible call to another world. The authenticity of this refreshing artist owes as much to invention as to tradition.
In his new album Aswât (Voices) which explores, in a subtle and personal vein, the Algerian musical heritage, we recognize the most current influences, tinged with folk and acoustic pop and striking. Inspiration, however, shifted sharply towards the traditional genres that rocked his early years.
This resurgence of musical modes and Algerian rhythms is not only perceptible in melodic accents and interpretation, while touches of sensitivity. It asserts itself in the phrasing and the counter-chants of the banjo and mandole that make their sublime sparks spring. Carried by these two twirling wings of the chaâbi and supported at its paroxysm by the bendir, the song takes altitude and selibère in a new, refreshing breath.
