À propos du lieu

Basilique Saint-Remi
Rue Simon, 51100 Reims
  • Marne
  • Grand Est
The former Benedictine Abbey of Saint Remi is one of the great places of early Christianity in Gaul.
Its church was built from the 11th century to house the relics of Saint Remi (died in 533). The latter baptized Clovis (late 5th century) and quickly became the patron of the diocese. The Romanesque nave bears witness to this first construction campaign.
In the 12th century, the building was enlarged to facilitate access for pilgrims. A new ambulatory choir and radiant chapels are raised in the style known as «of the first Gothic». The basilica has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991.
