The theme of 2024 JNA "New lives of buildings and new practices of architecture" is a great opportunity for the city of Pontivy to honor a heritage building recently rehabilitated!

The theatre of the halls, completely rehabilitated by the municipality of Pontivy as part of the program "Action Heart of City", opens its doors. Tours of the building, led by lecturers from the Pays d'Art et d'Histoire des Rohan and the tourist office, will reveal the past of the building. These will take you to meet those who today give him a new life.

Théâtre des Halles

Located in the heart of the old town of Pontivy, this double-function building was built from 1840\. Designed by architects Marsille and Richard, this classical building had two spaces: halls on the ground floor of the halls (inaugurated in 1848) and a theatre upstairs (inaugurated in 1949). Between 1932 and 1934, the theatre was modernized under the direction of architects Ramonatxo (father and son). The Pontivyan painter, Pierre Cadre was then asked to create a series of paintings in the performance hall depicting a Breton wedding. After having housed the Rex cinema, the floor was rehabilitated in 1999 as a theater with 190 seats. The municipality of Pontivy, as part of the «Action Cœur de Ville» program, is committed to giving a new lease of life to the Théâtre des Halles. The renovation work, launched in October 2021, includes a change of use to transform this building into a third place.
