Durch einen glücklichen Zufall lebten und arbeiteten Joseph Fourier und die Gebrüder Champollion unter dem Ersten Kaiserreich in der Hauptstadt der Dauphinoise. Ihre fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit führte später zur Entschlüsselung der Hieroglyphen durch den jüngsten von ihnen, Jean-François Champollion. Joseph Fourier, ein großer Diener des Imperiums, hat durch die Durchführung großer Projekte auch die Abteilung der Stadt geprägt.
