The Gier aqueduct is one of the ancient aqueducts of Lyon serving the ancient city of Lugdunum. With its 86km, it is the longest of the four aqueducts that supplied the city with water, and the one whose structures are the best preserved (Wikipedia).
The aqueduct of the Gier in its entirety, including the loop of the Durèze valley, develops over a length of 86km, with an elevation difference of 105m, or an average slope of 1.1m/ km. It crosses 21 municipalities, 11 in the Loire department and 10 in the Rhône. Its route has been recognized in more than 250 sites. Its flow is estimated at 15000m3/ day. The time of the end of its construction, envisaged today, would be the middle of the 1st century AD. The aqueduct retains, from one end to the other, the same general direction, of northeast orientation. Go to route des Arcs 42800 Génilac. Access by A47: take exit 12 then direction Chagnon by M65 (M65 formerly D65). After about 1 kilometre, turn right on Route des Arcs. Go to the bridge over the Durèze.
