The fort of the Heads is the most important bastioned works of the place. It is built south of the Castle on a rocky Eperon at 1460 meters above sea level . Its mission before 1870 was to protect the city with an armament of 70 pieces of artillery. After this date, it became part of the central nucleus, overseeing the passage through the Durance valley and accommodating part of the garrison of the square in its barracks.
