Caroline Hospital, a lazaret off Marseille (1828)
On the archipelago of Friuli, this architectural ensemble of the nineteenth century welcomed sick people, for more than a century, the time of quarantine with drastic living conditions.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the city was traumatized by the ravages of the great plague of 1720. The arid limestone reliefs of Friuli, eroded by iodine and beaten by the winds, appear as the ideal site to implement the twelve pavilions designed by the architect Michel-Robert Penchaud: the gusts of mistral will drive away miasmas and salt will come to clean the places washed daily with large (sea) waters. Exceptional opening during the European Heritage Days.
