This monument in Plantagenêt tufa imposes its massive beauty dominating the vineyards of Saumurois. William X began his construction to shelter a relic brought back from the Holy Land: the belt of the Virgin. His daughter, Eleanor of Aquitaine, completed the building around 1154\. From then on, illustrious figures came to pray to the Virgin, among them Louis XI, who founded a royal chapter at the collegiate church in 1481 on the model of that of the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris and enriching the treasure of the collegiate church with gifts of great value.
