Free visit of the Mulnière cross
An old fortified house, the Mulnière farm is best known for its famous cross pattée.
This cross is erected on the very spot where, during the Revolution, the republican troops had executed M. and Mme de Buor. But until the beginning of the century, it was more especially the lademoiselle fountain, located in the meadow of the same name, that attracted the locals here. It is said that its water had the power to cure you of certain diseases. Unfortunately the tradition no longer remembers which... Perhaps fevers? In the past, epidemic diseases such as malaria and typhoid were not uncommon. They were most often found in swampy areas or near port areas. In Brem, we had both... In 1785, 48 people were to die, swept away in a few weeks by a terrible epidemic.
But who was this mysterious «lady» of the Mulnière? Ancient Vendée legends say that this name was meant to recall the memory of fairies... Be that as it may, the writer Edmond Bocquier, in his topographical dictionary of the Vendée, reported for our single town no less than four places having been named «the lady». What between us proves at least one good thing: As for the choice of their "residence", these ladies had rather good taste...
