Guided tour of the temporary exhibition "Nos éclaireuses - Femmes et modernité autour de l'oeuvre d'Amélie Beaury-Saurel"
Guided tour of the temporary exhibition Nos éclaireuses - Femmes et modernité around the work of Amélie Beaury-Saurel
Born in Barcelona in 1848, Amélie Beaury-Saurel married Rodolphe Julian, founder of a Parisian school of painting and sculpture. This innovative school allows women to follow teachings. Quickly, Amélie took care of the women’s workshop while continuing her career as a portrait painter.
At the Paris Salon in 1914, Amélie Beaury-Saurel exhibited a painting entitled Our Scouts. It presents seven pioneers, such as the poet Lucie Delarue-Mardrus, the aviator Hélène Dutrieu, the lawyer Suzanne Grumberg and the painter Marguerite Vervoort.
The Roche-sur-Yon Museum preserves the fascinating painting of one of these pioneers. Amélie Beaury-Saurel stages a decidedly modern woman in a masculine suit, firmly holding the handlebars of her bicycle. Based on this work and its recently acquired preparatory study, the exhibition will focus on the representation of women in modernity.
Exhibition until 29 October 2023.
