In the heart of the Cévennes, in the house of a Camisard chef, the Desert Museum - recently enlarged with new rooms - showcases the history of Protestants in France.
The "Desert" in Cevennes? It was for the Protestants, under King Louis XIV and his successors, the time of persecution, hiding and resistance, for tolerance and freedom of conscience.
The place where lived Rolland, hero of the "war of the camisards", bears his traces: his hiding place, his weapons, his bible.
Today it houses a unique collection of objects, archives, paintings and books, bearing witness to a long history, inaugurated in the 16th century by the Reformation, and revived by the French Revolution.
