A fortress existed on site since 930, but the current castle dates from the fourteenth century. It underwent a restoration in 1771-72 under the direction of the architect Broussaud. It belonged to the counts and marquis of Bonneval for more than six centuries, including Claude-Alexandre de Bonneval (1675-1747), who became Pasha after his conversion to Islam and his passage in the service of the Ottoman Empire.
