The former commandery of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem founded probably in the 12th century is restored around 1540. This commandery was part of the language of Provence. The existence of the commandery of Condat sur Vézère is attested since 1239 in an act passed «in hospitali de Condato» between two members of the local clergy. However, it is likely that the Order of the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem was established there as early as the 12th century, when donations to the Order were the most numerous. Thus the viscount of Turenne, having appreciated in the Holy Land the effectiveness of this religious order, would have offered him the fief of Condat.
