Église abbatiale Saint-Martial
Le bourg, 24510 Paunat
- Dordogne
- Nouvelle-Aquitaine
A first abbey would have been based(established) by Saint-Cybard, according to legend, and confided(entrusted) to the members of a religious order of Saint martial of Limoges. Burnt by Normans in 849, it was restored towards 990 by the bishop Frotaire of Gourdon, the bishop of Périgueux. Undergoing the ill treatment of time(weather), the abbey or the church of Paunat was once again rebuilt towards the end of the XIth century. In the shape of Latin cross, its bell tower-hall lists(classifies) the abbey church of Paunat among churches strengthened by Périgord.
