Libournais is distinguished by the diversity of its landscapes interspersed by the winding valleys of the Dordogne and Isle. The areas of palus replace the hillsides and plateaus covered with vine and wood. If Libournais is famous for its wines (Pomerol, Lalande-de-Pomerol, Saint-Émilion, Fronsac and Canon-Fronsac), this specificity belongs to a recent history.
The eighteenth century offered a more diversified panorama: crops and woods dominated and many palus were still exploited for pasture and fodder. Marked by the development of estates owned by the Libourne bourgeoisie, this territory was transformed from the sixteenth century and especially in the nineteenth century.
Constituting the largest wine estate in Pomerol by its size, the castle of Sales was an essential link of this progressive conquest of the vineyard.
