In Bordeaux, as elsewhere, water has always been a key factor in the city’s establishment and development. Even if the Garonne is essential, it is around some springs and the rivers Devèze and Peugue now covered, that the first inhabitants settled. Our journey in the old Bordeaux to the Garonne, will evoke the evolution of water resources, their uses and their quantity and quality, from antiquity to today through the Middle Ages and the 19th century.
This walk is proposed by the association Terre & Océan with the support of L'Eau Bordeaux Métropole.

À propos du lieu

Cathédrale Saint-André

The cathedral was built in the 11th century. It contains a single nave of Romanesque origin, a 14th-century Gothic choir, three beautiful portals, funerary murals, Nottingham alabasters, bas-reliefs, a crucifixion by the Flemish painter Jacob Jordaens and 18th-century railings. The cathedral is a witness of a thousand years of Bordeaux history. More recently the presence of the Grandes Orgues, and the treasure bequeathed by Abbé Marcadet, the chapels and the sacristy restored, offer something to marvel at.
Listed as a Historical Monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998 under the Ways of Santiago de Compostela.
