In the mid-1930s, the state planned to increase the production of the Bergerac national blowing snow factory in the Dordogne and create an annex. It is planned to set up a real military-industrial complex, consisting of drifting snow and associated buildings for staff housing.
For the blowing snow alone, 421 hectares are requisitioned, one fifth of the territory of the Livradais commune, mainly agricultural land of this rich alluvial plain.
On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, take part in visits to this old industrial site never completed, guided by the association «Mémoire de la poudrerie».

In 1939 the government chose this very rich plain to build a large national blowing snow, annex to that of Bergerac. A railway is built to connect them.
The local labour force was insufficient, leaving 3,500 Spanish Republican refugees on the ground. They start by building 4 camps on the outskirts for their accommodation. They are still used today!
25 km of railway tracks are underway and construction of the 600 planned buildings begins. Small or huge, they are scattered over the 420 hectares for security. Thousands of tons of concrete and iron will be brought in as well as very large machines.
In May 1940 the debacle of the French armies marked the end of the work.
