Major works mark the history of the Cordouan lighthouse and a large-scale campaign was completed in 2022. The refueling of the shipyard was organized by sea transport or helicopter. It was therefore necessary to calculate as accurately as possible the quantities of stone, lime and the needs for tools.
On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, the lighthouse honors the craftsmen who have united their know-how during this great campaign of restoration work.
Several craftsmen will be present and will present to the visitors their profession, as well as the regional curator of historical monuments of the DRAC Nouvelle-Aquitaine, who will evoke the major phases of this colossal project.

The Cordouan Lighthouse is the oldest French lighthouse still in operation. Classified as a historic monument in 1862, together with Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, its grandiose architecture, the result of a long and tormented history, has made Cordouan a “Versailles of the Sea”, a lighthouse unique in the world whose visit can only inspire wonder.
