Guided walk: «Suzanne’s garden»
In 2023, the theme of the European Heritage Days is «Living Heritage» and «Sports Heritage». The city of Bordeaux gives this event the name of Heritage and Matrimony Days to better put women in the spotlight. It was a challenge to find a place to walk that would evoke several of these themes at once. The new Belvedere district meets this expectation. Located in the Garonne-Eiffel sector of the Bordeaux-Euratlantique operation, on the edge of the Garonne, at the outlet of the Saint-Jean bridge, it allows to attend live the factory of the city: the first inhabitants settle down while the construction works continue and a first work of art («La Carte, in the shadow of the city» by the Argentine artist Leandro Erlich) has just been installed on the future main square. To get to this 21st century Bordeaux, it will first be necessary to go back in time, from the Place Stalingrad to the Quai Deschamps, to evoke the old Bastide, the Stone Bridge, the fire station of Benauge, the house of Calixte Camelle, and enjoy the spectacular view of the left bank. And once arrived, a garden awaits us, the Suzanne Lenglen sports garden, which, associated with the walk of the alley of the bees and the future Eiffel Park, contributes to the project of right bank «green» imagined more than twenty years ago on the other side of the Stone Bridge. An opportunity to evoke one of the greatest French tennis players, nicknamed «la Divine», who gave her name to one of the central courts of Roland-Garros, and whose exceptional record, clothing innovations on the courts, The talents of the trainer and the links with the high society contributed to an extraordinary personality.
