In the south of the Pays d'Orthe and Arrigans, at the crossroads of the Landes and the Basque Country, is the village of Sorde-l'Abbaye. Its fame is mainly due to its abbey, built in the eleventh century, on the edge of the Gave of Oloron. The Abbey of Sorde has been listed as a Historical Monument since 1994 and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998 under the Ways of Santiago de Compostela.
