À propos du lieu

Tour de Montlhéry
Allée de la Tour 91310 Montlhéry
  • Essonne
  • Île-de-France
High place of the history of France, theatre of clashes between the first Capetians and the rebellious lords of the Ile-de-France, the tower, only vestige of the castle, remains a significant witness to the constructive processes and ambitions of a military architecture developed under Philippe Auguste. Admirably situated on a hill that dominates the city, it occupied a strategic position of control of the road of Orléans, major axis of the royal domain in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. It was also used in the 19th century for scientific research. Experiments were carried out on the calculation of the speed of sound and light and served as a relay for the Chappe Telegraph (extract from "Le château de Montlhéry", Itinéraire du patrimoine n°238, ADAGP, 2001).
