From the College of Surgery to the University Museum of the History of Medicine

Located in the premises of the former Faculty of Medicine of Paris, the Museum of History of Medicine offers collections, the oldest in Europe. They were brought together by the Dean Lafaye in the 18th century, then completed by an important set of pieces covering the different branches of operative art until the end of the 19th century. Today, the Museum of the History of Medicine has found its place among the many Parisian museums and enjoys an international reputation.

Louis XV asked Jacques Gondoin, architect, to build the College of Surgery, rue des Cordeliers, today rue de l'École de Médecine. As early as 1769, an "instrument room" was integrated into his plans and thus foreshadowed the present museum, even if the question of a museum was not seriously discussed until the beginning of the 20th century. Professor Mouquin, appointed to the Chair of the History of Medicine in 1951, really pushed the project with the support of Dean Binet. The museum will initially be reserved for professors and students of the Faculty of Medicine and finally opened its doors to the general public in 1994\. Its collections, the oldest in Europe, were brought together by Dean Lafaye in the 18th century, then added a large set of pieces that covered the different branches of the operative art until the end of the 19th century. In particular, there are instruments used in the care of the Louis XIV, as well as a few kits of doctors and surgeons or even physiology instrume
