À propos du lieu

Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève

His(Her,Its) unique(only) architecture, his(her, its) history(story) of many years, the wealth of bottoms kept(preserved) as well as the diversity of the welcomed public indicate(appoint) library(bookcase) Sainte-Geneviève as happy singularity in the fabric(tissue) of the French libraries(bookcases). Built by Henry Labrouste (1844-1850) and classified as "Historic Monument", the library(bookcase) welcomed his first readers on February 4th, 1851\. Archetype of the modern library(bookcase), it was copied in America. She(It) represents the first big(great) command(order) of Henry Labrouste, an autonomous and functional building which precedes the conception(design) of the imperial Library(Bookcase). Labrouste used a leading role in the metal, in structure as in ornamentation. With this work, he(it) put the ranging-poles(milestones) of a theory of the architecture of libraries(bookcases). The facade, monumental catalogue, has 810 names of famous characters, according to a chronological order not without kinship with the thought of Augustus count. The big(great) reading room allows the simultaneous welcome(reception) of more than 700 readers. Multidisciplinary by its collections, it keeps(preserves) about two million documents covering all domains of knowledge. Two specialised departments contribute to the influence(radiation) of the library(bookcase) Sainte-Geneviève: the Scandinavian library(bookcase), pole(centre) associated by the French National Library for languages(tongues), literatures, history(story) and finno-Scandinavian civilisations, and reserve, which keeps(preserves) and communicates, besides its modern and contemporary collections, 4 300 manuscripts, 160 000 volumes of old(former) rare and precious, printed documents, 50 000 engravings, as well as works and works of art resulting(coming) from the library(bookcase) and from the cabinet(office) of curiosity of the old(former) abbey Sainte-Geneviève.
