Paul Vera. Campagne de Thonon. Vers 1940. Saint-Germain-en-Laye, musée Ducastel-Vera, inv. 972.7.79. Cl. B. Chain

At the end of the great exhibition dedicated to the brothers Paul and André Vera in 2008, three rooms of the museum were dedicated to the permanent presentation of the works of Paul Vera and to the evocation of the Thebaid, the home of the brothers in Saint-Paul-VeraGermain-en-Laye, a true jewel of the Arc Déco that has disappeared. After a summer closure for works, the Ducastel-Vera Museum inaugurates a new museum of these rooms that celebrate Art Deco, the last great artistic style that has lost nothing of its modernity. In the last room, the new exhibition presents the landscapes of Paul Vera, painted on the motif in the 1930s and 1940s. During the dark period of the war, Vera, an outstanding watercolourist, painted light and made all the colors of nature shine.

Established in Saint-Germain-en-Laye on their property in La Thébaïde, Paul (1882-1957), a painter and decorator, and André Vera (1881-1971), a garden theorist, contributed to the influence of the Art Deco movement. The Thébaïde was designed by Jean-Charles Moreux (1889-1956) according to a rational conception of modern decoration. The collections bear witness to the diversity of Paul’s artistic production in the field of decorative arts (tapestry, ceramics, illustrated books, etc.) and garden projects during the interwar period. The dining room and the office of André Vera are restored.
