À propos du lieu

Église Saint-André

Á the location of an oratory devoted to Saint-André and Saint-Catherine in the XIIIth century in the suburb Cérès, demolished(destroyed) by the English people during Hundred Years' War, the parish church Saint-André is dedicated by the cardinal Charles of Lorraine in 1560\. Á Revolution, the building, declared very national, is acquired(bought back) by parishioners and extended from 1796, when the Catholic religion is restored. In 1865, the old(former) church is demolished(destroyed) and rebuilt in neogothic style by Narcissus Brunette (1808-1895), architect of the city and of the homes of Reims from 1837, author of numerous Reims buildings among which the Circus(Cirque), the Merry-go-round(Riding school) and the church Saint Thomas. The church undergoes important destructions during the World War I, requiring the restoration(catering) of vaults, of bell tower and of stained-glass windows (to which Simon workshops widely contributed).
