The Sainte-Croix Hospital in Joinville was founded in 1567 at the initiative of Antoinette de Bourbon, the first duchess of Guise and wife of the seigneur of Joinville, Claude de Lorraine. Initially taken in charge by devout women and servants, the care of the sick, souls and bodies was assumed from the 1720s by a community of sisters of Saint-Charles who managed the establishment until the 1980s. Right now, Sainte-Croix Hospital is a seniors' residence. Spared by the fire that destroyed much of the historic buildings in 1916, the former apothecary houses a classified collection of 17th-19th century bottles, vases and pharmacy pots.
