Signy-le-Petit is a village located in the heart of the Thiérache Ardennaise.
In 1132, the Premontrés of Cuissy, near Laon, settled in the forest of Signy-le-Petit to create an abbey. This architectural project never saw the light of day.
In 1214, Nicolas de Rumigny, who had given the land of Signy, decided to found a «free city», that is to say a village, failing to found an abbey there.
Situated on the border of the Spanish Netherlands, the village of Signy-le-Petit suffered greatly from the Thirty Years' War. In 1636, a gang of looters devastated the country and burned down the church, as well as the village. The fortified church will be built over the next thirty years…
