À propos du lieu

La Grande Saline de Salins-les-Bains
3 place des Salines 39110 Salins-les-Bains

  • Bourgogne-Franche-Comté
It is the one that begins the epic journey of salt in Franche-Comté: capturing white gold from the depths of the earth, the Grande Saline de Salins-les-Bains is one of the oldest sites for the exploitation of ignigenic salt. For 1200 years, from the 8th century until 1962, men and women produced the salt, essential for the preservation of food and true wealth that made Salins-les-Bains the economic capital of the medieval Franche-Comté. With its impressive subterranean gallery built in the thirteenth century to protect the saltwater wells and extending for 165 m under the city, its hydraulic wheel and its monumental wooden balance of the nineteenth century still in operation, the evaporation building where the last salt pan of France is located, the Grande Saline is one of the jewels of the Franche-Comté. More than just a visit, share and live the history of a living heritage registered with UNESCO since 2009!
