On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, the House of Holy Angels will open its doors for free visits on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 September from 10am to 12pm and from 2pm to 6pm. The walls of the second Jacobin convent, founded by Saint Louis in 1255, are those of the present House of Holy Angels. Located between the court and the prefecture, it occupies a whole island in the historic center of Mâcon. The last active religious community has been there since 1844. Its founder, Barbe Élise Poux (originally from the Jura and a teacher by training) created a school for the education of girls from well-off backgrounds. Since then, the community of Holy Angels has spread to Brazil where education remains a priority.
Thanks to the dedication of the sisters and their availability, they have been able to make their incredible heritage a welcoming home full of calm and serenity. Behind this place full of history hides a place of surprising and great diversity.

À propos du lieu

Founded by Saint Louis in 1255 (an epigraphic text attests to its foundation), the house that houses the Holy Angels dates back almost 900 years. It occupies a whole islet in the historic heart of the city of Mâcon and is bounded by the Rue Léonce Lex, the Rue de la Préfecture, and the Place des Carmélites. Today the community of the Sisters of the Holy Angels houses a dozen nuns. Their activities are centred around hospitality, because “love and serve” is their motto.
