This fortress, erected on a rocky promontory at the confluence of the Lizaine and the Allan, is attested around 985\. Residence of the counts since the eleventh century, it is the capital of the country of Montbéliard, integral part of the Germanic empire. In 1397, she returned by marriage to the Württemberg family who kept her until 1793\. Today, the museum of the castle houses collections of natural sciences, archaeology, history and fine arts, and seeks to retrace the history of the country of Montbéliard. Numerous exhibitions are developed there, thus valuing these different areas.
